Koru's story

Hi, my name’s Mark and I’m a chartered architect who cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of people and our natural environment. My journey into the world of environmental sustainability began in the early 1990s when, only a few years post qualification, I gave up my career in a high-profile architect’s practice and embarked on travel adventures across Europe, Africa, Asia and South America.

By the time I returned I’d witnessed wide-scale environmental devastation and the effects of climate change in many poorer parts of the world while the wealthy developed nations had barely noticed anything was wrong.

I could see clearly what was coming and made it my mission to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. I made lifestyle changes and resolved to make a difference in both my personal and professional life.

In March 2000 I established Koru Architects with the intention of designing sustainable, low-energy buildings which would reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of healthy, natural and sustainable materials. I studied and trained extensively and put my new skills to practice with a string of healthy, low-energy homes that followed.

My practice now offers certified Passive House designs to deliver ultra-performance homes in addition to zero carbon homes and homes built with healthy bio-based materials.

What does Koru mean?

If you’re curious about the name of my practice, the koru symbol is rooted in the culture and art of New Zealand, the furthest point in my travels. The koru is a spiral shape based on the shape of a new unfurling silver fern frond which symbolises new beginnings, life, hope and harmony. The outer coil represents growth and change while the inner coil represents a return to the point of origin and stillness - a metaphor for the way life both changes and yet remains the same.

Mission Possible

To design only passive house and zero carbon homes by the end of 2025 that are beautiful, comfortable and healthy for you and your family.
