A low-energy transformation with panoramic views of the South Down
Maria & Frank relocated from London to Sussex in search of a more sustainable lifestyle. Their new home—a modest 1960s detached house—had great potential but was outdated, poorly insulated, and expensive to run. They approached us to reimagine it as a warm, efficient, and future-proofed home that better connects to the landscape.
Our design strategy focused on thermal performance, modern living, and capturing the site's best asset: the spectacular views of the South Downs.
We proposed a two-storey extension to the south, introducing a light-filled living room, a master bedroom, and a library—each oriented to take in the sweeping rural views. A single-storey lobby extension to the north accommodates a new staircase and provides a practical buffer to the main living areas.
The new timber-framed extensions are super-insulated with natural cellulose and built to high airtightness standards. The existing house will be thermally upgraded with external wall insulation, a new rendered finish, and a zinc roof integrated with solar PV panels. The outdated oil-fired boiler will be replaced with a modern air-source heat pump, slashing carbon emissions and reducing energy bills.
The result is a comfortable, low-energy home that blends modern living with deep sustainability—perfectly aligned with Maria & Frank’s lifestyle goals.
