RIBA Ideas Competition – Urban Regeneration & Environmental Vision
This RIBA ideas competition called for visionary proposals to transform a brownfield site in Edinburgh into a model for urban regeneration and environmental conservation. Our winning design presents a vibrant and inclusive urban quarter, centred on the principles of social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
At the heart of the proposal is a central market square—a lively communal space designed to foster interaction, community identity, and economic activity. Around it, a densely layered mixed-use development integrates residential, commercial, and social spaces, encouraging a diverse and resilient urban fabric where people can live, work, and connect locally.
The architecture draws from contemporary vernacular, with terraced buildings carefully oriented to maximise natural light and passive solar gain, reducing energy demand and enhancing comfort for residents and workers alike. Generous glazing and thoughtful massing allow for light-filled interiors and seasonal adaptability, while creating a visually cohesive and uplifting environment.
A site-wide renewable energy strategy underpins the sustainability ethos. A combined heat and power (CHP) plant, fuelled by municipal tree offcuts, provides district heating and electricity, supplemented by on-site wind turbines. Together, these systems drastically reduce the development’s carbon footprint and operating costs.
This concept envisions a compact, walkable and resilient neighbourhood, providing a replicable blueprint for low-carbon urban living—balancing high-quality design with ecological responsibility and civic life.
