An eco architect who practices both green and sustainable design explains the difference. Green architecture and sustainable architecture are terms often used interchangeably, but they have slightly different focuses. Learn more about Green versus Sustainable Architecture.
Green architecture
Green architecture primarily emphasizes the use of environmentally friendly materials, technologies, and design strategies to reduce the negative impact on the environment. It focuses on minimizing energy consumption, reducing waste, and utilizing renewable resources. Green architecture may involve incorporating features like solar panels, efficient insulation, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient appliances into building designs. The main goal of green architecture is to create structures that have a minimal ecological footprint and limit harm to the environment. An eco architect will always look to maximise the use of natural and bio-based materials in a building which will reduce toxic emissions and will improve the health and wellbeing of the occupants.
Sustainable architecture
On the other hand, sustainable architecture takes a broader approach by considering the long-term viability and balance between environmental, social, and economic aspects. It seeks to create buildings that not only minimise environmental impact but also promote social well-being and economic prosperity. Sustainable architecture considers factors like community integration, occupant comfort and health, resource conservation, and the use of local materials. It also takes into account the life cycle of a building, including construction, operation, and eventual demolition or reuse.

In simple terms, green architecture primarily focuses on environmental concerns, while sustainable architecture considers a wider range of factors, including social and economic aspects, in addition to environmental considerations. Both approaches aim to create buildings that are environmentally responsible, but sustainable architecture takes a more holistic view of the overall impact on society and the planet.
As an eco architect and Passive House designer I apply the principles of green and sustainable architecture to all our projects, often without any obvious visible signs, but always with a saving in energy and running costs and an improvement in comfort and well being.
