Brighton & Hove City Council – Residential Redevelopment Concept
This competition invited innovative proposals for residential redevelopment on small, challenging brownfield sites within Brighton. Our design presents three contemporary four-bedroom homes, carefully crafted to maximize living space on a constrained, sloping plot.
The homes are split-level, with bedrooms and bathrooms arranged on the ground and first floors, while the entrance hall leads down to a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area on the lower ground floor. This layout optimizes usable space and creates distinct living zones.
The living area opens seamlessly onto private gardens through large southeast-facing glazed doors, complemented by rooflights that flood the interiors with natural daylight and provide valuable passive solar heating during cooler months.
Sustainability features include a green sedum roof on the lower ground floor, enhancing insulation and biodiversity, while the sloped roof above supports a comprehensive array of solar thermal and photovoltaic panels to meet much of the homes’ energy needs.
The rear façade is carefully modulated to increase its southerly orientation, boosting passive solar gain and adding architectural texture and visual interest to the elevation.
This project balances contemporary design with environmental performance, providing high-quality, energy-efficient family homes tailored to a complex urban site.
