Future-proof House Ideas Competition
Brighton & Hove City Council launched this design competition to explore flexible, future-ready housing concepts for a small brownfield site in Brighton—homes that could adapt to a variety of social needs and urban settings.
Our proposal focused on using light and space creatively to make a compact footprint feel generous and uplifting. Large, well-placed windows, seamless connections to outdoor space, and an open-plan layout create a sense of spaciousness and comfort. The design also offers the option to easily and affordably extend into the roof space, providing additional rooms as needed.
Adaptable to different life stages, the home can suit a variety of occupants—from young professionals sharing a home, to growing families, to older couples who might convert a bedroom into an office, studio, or reading room. This flexibility is matched by long-term sustainability, with an environmentally conscious design that includes FSC-certified timber, natural insulation, an air-tight building envelope, low-flow water fittings, rooftop solar panels, and passive solar gain potential depending on orientation.
