Arts & Crafts charm meets modern sustainability
Emma and Andrew wanted to raise their young family close to good schools and community amenities in the vibrant market town of Horsham. But with no suitable homes available in their ideal location, they found an alternative path: purchasing an outdated property on a spacious plot and building their own.
The result is a beautifully designed, low-energy four-bedroom home with a garage and home office. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts style of the original house, the new design blends traditional charm with a contemporary edge and high-performance, sustainable features.
At the heart of the home is a split-level layout, with a central staircase rising in half-flights beneath a rooflight-filled atrium — flooding the space with natural daylight. A palette of natural materials, including brick and a zinc roof with a large solar PV array, gives the home character and lasting appeal.
Constructed with a highly insulated, airtight timber frame and fitted with triple-glazed windows, the house is exceptionally energy efficient. A mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery ensures a consistently comfortable indoor environment all year round.
Emma and Andrew were delighted with the result:
“Working with Mark was a fantastic experience from start to finish. He was very responsive and we felt in safe hands at all times, from initial design right through the contract management.”
