Energy-efficient transformation of a period cottage in the South Downs National Park
When Georgia and John purchased a tired period cottage nestled at the foot of the South Downs, they saw the potential to create their dream family home — one that was comfortable, spacious, and environmentally conscious. They approached Koru to help reimagine the property, removing unsympathetic 1960s additions and designing new extensions that would double the floor area while blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
Our design introduced both a two-storey rear extension and a single-storey side wing, carefully positioned to maximise views of the Downs and optimise passive solar gain. The existing cottage was thermally upgraded as much as possible, while the new additions were constructed to high energy efficiency standards, with excellent insulation and airtightness.
A fully automated wood pellet biomass boiler system provides heat via underfloor heating, supported by roof-mounted solar thermal panels. The result is a low-energy home with dramatically reduced running costs.
To respect the character of the original house and the rural setting, we used a combination of local sweet chestnut timber cladding, brickwork, and clay roof tiles, complemented by zinc roofing elements that give a contemporary edge. The new home also accommodates a therapy room for Georgia’s home-based business, delivering both practicality and beauty.
Eight years on, Georgia and John continue to enjoy the sustainable features and the thoughtful design that supports their lifestyle.
As they put it:
“Koru Architects made us reconsider our options and took us in a direction we hadn’t expected — but are very happy with. They managed the whole project, dealt with the contractors, and ensured everything went smoothly. It was very important to us that sustainability was central to the design. The extension is comfortable, aesthetically pleasing and relatively inexpensive to run.”
