Elegant, energy-efficient side extension designed to connect with the forest landscape
Sara and Hew live in a secluded home on the edge of the Ashdown Forest, surrounded by ancient trees and unspoilt countryside. Although the location was idyllic, their existing conservatory—installed by the previous owners—was uncomfortable and energy inefficient, becoming unbearably hot in summer and freezing cold in winter. They approached Koru to reimagine the space with a modern, climate-responsive design that could serve both as an additional living area and a home office.
Our solution replaced the outdated conservatory with a carefully designed two-part extension. At the front, we created a new home office wing positioned opposite the existing entrance wing, restoring balance to the overall composition of the house. This new volume was designed to be sympathetic in scale and materials, blending seamlessly with the brick and tile character of the original house.
To the rear, we introduced a contrasting, contemporary glass pavilion — a minimalist flat-roofed structure that opens up wide views of the surrounding woodland and distant fields. The glazing creates a powerful sense of connection to nature, allowing Sara and Hew to enjoy close-up views of the forest wildlife, including the deer that regularly visit.
Both parts of the extension are highly insulated and energy efficient, dramatically improving comfort and significantly reducing running costs. This sensitive and functional addition not only enhances daily living but has also added lasting value to the property.
