Extension & Renovation | Lewes

Contemporary zinc and glass addition to a 1930s home

Eva and Corneel loved the charm of their 1930s detached house on the edge of Lewes, but the kitchen and dining spaces felt cramped and disconnected from their generous, upward-sloping rear garden. They approached Koru to help reimagine the heart of their home — creating a space that would be light-filled, sociable, and more connected to the outdoors.

Our design solution was a bold yet sensitive rear extension, clad in dark anthracite zinc that contrasts beautifully with the original red brick and tile. A gently curving ceiling rises from the existing ground floor level to meet tall, sliding glazed doors that open onto the garden — framing expansive views and drawing in natural light. To ease the transition between inside and the elevated garden beyond, we introduced a mid-height terrace ideal for outdoor dining and sunny mornings.

Inside, the space is minimalist and calm, with polished concrete floors and long slot rooflights that bathe the kitchen and dining area in daylight. A striking frameless glass bay window added to the living room gives the family a bright, peaceful place to sit and enjoy the changing light throughout the day.

The result is a beautifully balanced transformation — blending the character of the original house with a crisp, modern extension that enhances daily living and connects seamlessly to nature.
