A comfortable ‘forever’ home on a rural smallholding
When Gail and Geoff discovered a peaceful smallholding on the edge of a Sussex village, they saw an opportunity to build their ideal retirement home — one that would be comfortable, low-impact, and in harmony with the land. The existing bungalow on the site no longer met their needs, so they approached Koru to design a sustainable replacement that could support a slower-paced, more connected lifestyle.
Our design made full use of the sloping site to discreetly increase the floor area by more than 50% while keeping the original ridge height unchanged — a key factor in securing smooth planning approval. Construction was completed efficiently within 12 months.
The new home is crafted to high sustainability standards, with airtightness and insulation values equivalent to Passivhaus performance. Natural, low-embodied energy materials were used throughout, including local Sussex sandstone, Sweet Chestnut cladding, sheep’s wool insulation, and a zinc roof that blends beautifully into the rural surroundings.
Renewable technologies were thoughtfully integrated:
– Solar PV and solar thermal panels
– Whole-house MVHR system for fresh, filtered air
– Rainwater harvesting for garden and utility use
The result is a warm, light-filled home that supports both comfort and ecological responsibility.
Years later, Gail and Geoff continue to enjoy the life they imagined:
“We remain very happy with the lifestyle the project has helped us achieve. Mark came up with a wonderful design which maximises the natural attributes of this rural site and harnesses new technologies.”
