An ultra-low energy pod for work, rest and escape
Originally conceived as a competition entry for the 2014 Sunday Times and British Homes EcoHaus design brief, the PassivPod began as an imaginative concept for ecological lakeside holiday accommodation. Our shortlisted proposal explored how design could meet exceptional sustainability standards while creating a visually iconic and organic form.
The result was the PassivPod: an elegant, ellipsoidal structure whose distinctive shape wasn’t just aesthetic — it was born from thermal logic. The smooth curves reduce heat loss, optimise solar gain, and help the pod blend seamlessly into natural surroundings. Its form reflects both performance and harmony with the landscape.
Since its inception, the PassivPod concept has evolved into a versatile series of single-storey units, now available in various sizes to serve as garden offices, eco holiday lets, educational spaces, and more. What unites them is a commitment to Passivhaus principles: ultra-low energy use, excellent air quality, and year-round comfort with minimal heating — even on the coldest days.
Constructed from a plywood rib framework, the pods are super-insulated with natural cellulose, sealed for airtightness, and elevated on stilts, allowing installation on sloping or uneven terrain. The exterior is clad in Western Red Cedar shingles, chosen for their durability and natural weathering, while a triple-glazed glazed front screen brings in light and passive solar warmth. An integrated heat recovery ventilation system ensures fresh, filtered air and consistent comfort inside.
Every material used has been carefully selected for its low embodied energy and non-toxic properties, resulting in a building that supports both environmental sustainability and occupant wellbeing.
The PassivPod is a forward-thinking response to the changing way we live and work — offering a space that is beautiful, energy-efficient, and built for a healthier future.
